Merchandise Management System, Business Analysis for MMS, Space Planning

公司

Scouting America Outfitters is a division of Scouting America, the organization formerly known as Boy Scouts of America. Scouting America Outfitters is responsible for purchasing, distributing, and selling the merchandise that supports the organization’s members. This includes a wide assortment of products ranging from uniforms and patches to Pinewood Derby® and handbooks. It operates both retail and wholesale channels, including branded eCommerce sites, and 125 company-operated Scout Shops.

企業挑戰

Scouting America Outfitters lacked a centralized system to manage inventory and sales across its retail network. Each Scout Shop independently managed its own assortment and was responsible for placing replenishment orders with its distribution center. This decentralized approach limited its visibility into its processes, leading to inconsistent assortments across locations, and unreliable insight into demand patterns, which then led to missed sales opportunities.

Scouting America Outfitters uses Blue Yonder Merchandise Management System (MMS) as its foundation for centralized inventory, sales, and replenishment management. It serves as the operational backbone for nearly every aspect of the business, including product purchasing, store replenishment, web order processing, and accounts payable and receivable. In addition, Blue Yonder Space Planning capabilities help Scouting America Outfitters standardize store layouts while accounting for the fact that no two Scout Shops have the same physical footprint. Together, these solutions allow Scouting America Outfitters to move from reactive, store-driven inventory management to a centralized, data-driven operation.

“Blue Yonder has allowed us to greatly reduce our inventory levels while increasing inventory turns by having greater visibility into inventory information, and everyone having access to the same data.”

–Wayne Shell, Business Systems Manager, Scouting America Outfitters

Overcoming mounting challenges in inventory operations

Scouting America Outfitters’ distribution center was processing a constant flow of small, frequent orders driven by individual store behavior. This approach increased labor costs, reduced picking efficiency, and made it difficult to plan workloads.

Limited visibility hindered an enterprise-wide view of inventory and sales performance across stores, high-ordering frequency created unnecessary strain on distribution center operations, and product availability varied significantly from location to location.

“Before Blue Yonder, there was no centralized system to view store inventory and sales. We relied on each store to maintain its own assortment and order products from the distribution center. On average, each store placed five orders per week from the distribution center and there were a lot of missed sales opportunities from not having the right product in the right amount in the stores,” says Shell.

These issues directly impacted both customer experiences and internal team efficiencies. Store teams spent excessive time managing inventory and placing orders, while the distribution center processed a high volume of small, inefficient shipments.

Standardizing store replenishment and reducing distribution complexity

With Blue Yonder Merchandise Management System, Scouting America Outfitters fundamentally changed this model. Scout Shops are now replenished once per week rather than five times per week, using system-driven recommendations based on actual sales and inventory positions.

This shift provided numerous benefits, including:

  • Lower distribution center workload volatility.
  • Improved labor planning and efficiency.
  • More consistent product availability at stores.
  • Reduced transportation and handling costs.

Most importantly, these gains were achieved without sacrificing service levels. Improved forecasting and replenishment logic help ensure that the right products are available in the right quantities.

Creating enterprise-wide inventory visibility

Blue Yonder creates a single source of truth for Scouting America Outfitters’ sales and inventory data. Teams across purchasing, merchandising, finance, and operations now work from the same data set. This shared visibility enables improved forecast accuracy, better coordination between departments, and faster response to changes in demand.

“Every aspect of our business is touched by Blue Yonder MMS. We use MMS for purchasing products, replenishing products to the stores, processing web orders, accounts payable and receivable and general ledger functions,” says Shell.

The impact of this shared visibility has extended beyond Scouting America Outfitters’ headquarters. Scout Shops benefit from consistent assortments and reliable replenishment, reducing the need for manual intervention and local workarounds.

With centralized visibility and automated replenishment in place, Scouting America Outfitters significantly improved inventory efficiency. The organization reduced overall inventory levels while simultaneously increasing inventory turns.

Standardizing store experiences for customers

Scout Shops vary widely in size and layout, which historically made it difficult for Scouting America Outfitters to create consistent customer experiences across stores. With Blue Yonder Space Planning capabilities, the organization can design standardized assortments and layouts that are adapted to each store’s physical constraints.

This approach ensures that core products are consistently presented across locations while allowing flexibility where needed. The result is a matching look and feel across each Scout Shop, improved merchandising effectiveness, and better use of limited store space.

Enabling better analysis and faster decisions

Blue Yonder Business Analysis for MMS has expanded Scouting America Outfitters’ ability to analyze performance across products, stores, and channels. Instead of relying on manual reports or disconnected tools, teams can now explore data directly within the MMS environment.

This capability supports faster decision-making and reduces reliance on manual analysis. Leaders can quickly identify trends, evaluate performance, and take corrective action when needed.
